The Eastern box turtle is one of the most popular and colorful of all box turtles in the world.  Easterns or EBTs can be found all around the Eastern seaboard of the USA.  Believe it or not, Easterns can be found main all the way to South Carolina!  The eastern box turtle actually does differ a bit in color, and shell pattern, based on its original locale.  There is much difference seen for example when comparing an Eastern box turtle from South Carolina, with one found in PA.  Our captive bred eastern box turtles for sale are some of the nicest, most colorful you will find anywhere.  Turtle store’s captive breeding program is overseen by our staff biologist who has made up some fantastic groupings of our most colorful Eastern box turtle for sale online.

Three Toed Box turtle

Three-toed box turtles for sale are a popular species of box turtles.  The three toe box turtle is found throughout the central USA.  Similar to the Eastern box turtle, the 3 toed box turtle for sale is commonly captive bred.  Here at the Turtle store, we have some super colorful baby 3 toed box turtles as well as juvenile and young adult 3 toed box turtles.  When considering a 3 toed box turtle, we recommend a well-started baby over th more fragile box turtle hatchlings for sale.

Florida box turtle

Florida box turtles are another popular and colorful species of box turtle.  Baby Florida box turtles look similar to the ornate box turtle, though they are larger, and have a deeper contrast.  Florida box turtles are nearly always seen with a black carapace/shell and vibrant yellow “dashes” across the shell.  Florida box turtles spend a bit more time in the water than other species, like the Eastern.  Keep in mind that Florida box turtles are probably the rarest of all in the box turtle family.  For these reasons, Florida’s are definitely more expensive than all box turtle species, excluding the Chinese box turtle.  These semi-aquatic and super colorful box turtles are found around Florida and the Eastern panhandle of the United States.

Ornate Box turtle

Ornates are another colorful species of box turtles.  The ornate box turtle is found from the Mid-western USA to the Western USA.  Ornates do not hibernate like most other species of box turtles and require more UVB exposure.  Unlike their eastern cousins, the ornates do not spend most of their lives under leaf litter / cover.  For these reasons, you will need to consider providing a better light source (UVB) for Ornates over other species of box turtles for sale online.

Chinese box turtles

The Chinese box turtle is perhaps the crown jewel of all the box turtle species.  Chinese box turtles are more expensive than any other species of box turlte do to their rarity.  When looking for a baby chinese box turtle for sale, be sure that is captive bred. Captive bred Chinese box turtles can make excellent additions to any box turtle collection.  The chinese box turtle is found in China and surrouding area of Asia.  There is also an “asian box turtle” which is a completely separate species and often confused with Chinese box turtles.  Here at the turtle store, we off REAL Chinese box turtles for sale.

Box turtle species we work with here at Turtle store

Box Turtle Natural Habitat

Eastern box turtles prefer deciduous forests and mixed forests. (A deciduous forest have trees and shrubs that shed their leaves seasonally.  In comparison, a mixed forest has evergreen trees as well, such as evergreen firs and pine trees.)

What does a Box Turtle eat?

Eastern box turtles for sale are opportunistic omnivores that will eat both animal and plant matter. Because are known to eat a lot of different things, including fruits, berries, mushrooms, flowers, grasses, etc. Mostly all box turtles can catch prey but will happily eat carrion as well. In contrast, when in the wild, they catch suitably sized animals such as snails, worms, slugs, and beetles. Because of this, when the opportunity presents itself they will happily go after bigger prey as well, e.g. birds caught in nets.

Feed the right box turtle foods for sale

As a rule of thumb, give your eastern box turtle roughly 50% protein-rich food (such as worms, beetles, grasshoppers, etc), 10% dark leafy greens and 40% vegetables, fruits and mushrooms.  We also feed Mazuri tortoise chow to our Eastern box turtles for sale, and they love it!

Box Turtle Lifespan

(How old does box turtle get?)

Eastern box turtles exceeding a hundred years of age have been encountered in the wild. Due to unsuitable living conditions and faulty diets, captive eastern box turtles often die much younger than this.    As a result of good care, Eastern box turtles can be very long-lived, possibly up to 100 years. Sadly, many in captivity will not survive that long (30 to 50 years is more typical; even shorter with less than ideal care).

Box turtles live a long time!

Similarly to other box turtle species, Easterns can be long-lived! Because of this, when considering where to buy an eastern box turtle for sale near me, please also understand your new pet box turtle for sale online could live over 50 years and make plans accordingly!  These can be lifelong pet box turtles for sale.

Eastern Box Turtle Geographic Distribution
Most noteworthy, the Eastern box turtle lives in the eastern United States, from eastern Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas to the Atlantic Ocean. We can find Easterns all the way from southern Florida in the south to southern Main and the southern and eastern parts of the Michigan Upper Peninsula in the north.

What to feed box turtles?

First of all, before you buy your new baby eastern box turtle for sale online and have him shipped, make sure you have food readily available.  Secondly, take a look at the natural diet of the eastern box turtle and try to give it similar foods in captivity. Of course, one does not have to be super-strict. For instance, wild eastern box turtles are unlikely to encounter kiwi fruit since that fruit is native to another part of the world.  Lastly, realize that but they will still do nicely on a diet that contains kiwi in captivity since they are generalized fruit-eaters in the wild.

 Box Turtles – Water

While box turtles are not aquatic, it is not unusual for them to wade into shallow water to drink and have a soak. Make sure a shallow pan of water is readily accessible (and kept clean) at all times. On hot, dry days, run a sprinkler or mist their pen for added moisture.

 Box Turtle Temperature and Light

If kept in an outdoor pen, make sure there are both sunny and shady areas available (the turtle should be able to move from cooler to warmer areas as necessary).

Indoors, a terrarium will need a heat source as well as a UVB emitting reptile light. Provide a basking spot with temperatures of 85 to 88 F, maintaining the terrarium with a gradient down to about 75 F. The nighttime temperature should not drop below 70 F.

In contrast, other species of box turtles we offer are the 3 Toed Box turtle, Florida Box turtle,  Ornate Box Turtle, and the Chinese Box Turtle.  Most importantly, our sister store, CB Reptile also offers baby turtles for sale as well as aquatic turtles for sale, however, we have a larger selection here at the turtle store.
