Aldabra Tortoise Habitat
Aldabra tortoises seem to tolerate a large range of conditions but a warm stable environment is recommended. Baby and adult Aldabra tortoise care includes paying attention to Aldabra tortoise habitat temperatures. Also noteworthy, the Aldabra giant tortoises for sale should have a hot spot of at least 100F. Secondly, provide yoru new pet Aldabra giant tortoise and a cool section of no less than 75F. Their heated hide box should be at least 80F.
You can attain this by fixing a heat emitter to the ceiling of the hide box. The wattage of the heat source is going to be determined by the insulation of the hide box and the surrounding temperature. A UV source is a must if you cannot provide daily exposure to natural sunlight. For this a self-ballasted mercury vapor lamp is recommended.
Aldabra tortoises and humidity
Originating from an island, aldabras need to be kept a high humidity level. The recommended is 55 to 65% for a full-grown giant tortoise. In their non-captive habitat the humidity can reach 85% for as long as three months. If humidity is not kept where it should be, you will see signs of dehydration in your tortoise. This can include pyramiding.
Aldabra Tortoise Temperature
Since they come from an island, Aldabras often do not have problems with high heat as long as they are properly hydrated. The recommended temperature is 80-95F. These temperatures can be kept by using heat lamps, heating pads or heat emitters.
Aldabra tortoise for sale – aldabra tortoise water
As like all living things, giant tortoises need water. Water should be available for your tortoise at all times, not only when they are being fed. For baby aldabra tortoises, it is important that they are soaked for 10-15 minutes a day. This ensures that your baby tort is drinking water and will help prevent pyramiding on its shell in years to come. A proper tortoise soaking will last about 10 minutes and is done in a bin. It is very important to find the perfect amount of water that suits your tortoise. The water must be high enough for the tortoise to be able to drink from it but low enough so that it does not drown.
Aldabra UVB lighting
UVB light exposure is extremely important for all tortoises, including baby Pancake tortoises. We recommend a Reptisun UVB 10.0 lamp, T5 (tube style). Using the 10% lamp is good, however for distances 15-24″ above the tortoise, a 12% lamp is recommended. Arcadia UVB lamps are the best in our opinion, though a tad more pricey, they also last twice as long. The mercury vapor metal halide bulb also works well with pancake tortoises.
Aldabra Tortoise Appearance
Aldabra tortoises are dark grey to black in color. They have a thick carapace that is highly domed. Their visible small neck plate differentiates them from other species of giant tortoise. They are also the second-largest species of tortoise.
